Form SA1

A person can sign themselves up to file their own tax returns by filling out the Form SA1 and submitting it to HMRC. People who do not engage in self-employment but are required to register for one reason or another use this form. All that is required of you is to download the SA1 form and then fill in the information outlined in the guidance. Many individuals are under the impression that self-assessment is something that is only applicable to those who are self-employed. This oversight causes a lot of people who are due a tax refund to miss out on their money. You must fill out this form; if you’re claiming more than £2,500 in expenses, it must be done through a tax return. The turnaround time for HMRC to issue UTR is ten working days. Tax agents can use their agent portal to complete the online Form SA1 on behalf of clients.

You are required to register for self-assessment if any of the following apply to you: you have any untaxed income (for example, from renting out a property, etc.), usually more than £1,000; you want to claim tax relief, such as SEIS/EIS; you earned more than £100,000 in the previous tax year (including from full-time employment); etc. After completing the SA1 registration process, you will be mailed a UTR number. To submit your tax return, you will need to have your UTR on hand.
